Gavin Blacklock is a musician and private music teacher from Auchtermuchty in Fife. Gavin has been drumming for over 20 years. shortly after graduating from the musicians institute of London where he studied professional guitar, he met a group of African musicians who introduced him to the rhythms of Africa.
Gavin was first taught Djembe by master drummer Moussa Camara of the Fatala drum troup. where he not only learnt to play djembe but also how to make, repair and reskin the instrument. He then when on to continue his training with Ayodele Scott of the Afro-Celtic dance band Baka Beyond. where he expanded his knowledge and developed his technique. Finally he was taught by Magatte Dieng of Le Supper Etoile de Dakar / Youssou N’Dour. Magatte’s family have been griots (Ritual Musicians) for generations, passing these traditions on father to son and mother to daughter.
Gavin has great knowledge of Djembe, Doundoun, Bougarabou, and Tama (talking drum) and he feels that to have such great knowledge and traditions passed on to him is a great honor and privilege.
